The dictionary meaning of the word is “A deep awareness of the suffering of another coupled with the wish to relieve it.”
Giving service to the less fortunate certainly is compassionate. Helping friends and family is compassionate. Being aware of the suffering in the world and doing something about it, even in a small way, is compassionate.
Living each day with compassion is not too much to do.
